Loksatta protests with water cans at HMWS&SB

Irked by acute water scarcity in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the Loksatta party organized a protest at the main office of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). The citizens and Loksatta activists, holding water cans, demonstrated before the Water Board at Khairatabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Loksatta State joint secretary Deviprasad, Greater Hyderabad unit president and general secretary Dosapati Rami Reddy and Sambi Reddy respectively said the Water Supply Board was releasing only 352 mgd water as against the requirement of 530 mgd causing acute shortage of water in various parts of the city. The water-starved citizens were facing severe hardships and running from pillar to post. While the water supply situation is so horrible now, they said, they cannot imagine the gravity of the situation in the coming summer months.

The Loksatta leaders pointed out that the water was being supplied once in four days now as against the early alternate day water supply. They demanded that the State government initiate immediate steps to bring the Godavari waters to the city in view of the crisis situation. They also urged the authorities concerned to increase the number of water absorption pits in the city for which Rs 132 crore unspent funds were available.

Reminding that the ruling party leaders were frequently stating that the Hyderabad city will be transformed into another Singapore, the Loksatta leaders urged the State government water supply to the citizens like Singapore city.

The Loksatta party leaders displayed flexes with slogan “Neellu-Kanneellu” (water and tears) at the protest program. Loksatta leaders Hyma Praveen, Ganga Bhavani, Raghavaiah and others were present. (NSS)
