Landslides close Jammu-Srinagar highway

Jammu: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway No. 1-A was closed to vehicular traffic on Monday following landslides in Jammu region’s Ramban district.

“Landslides were triggered by heavy rain in Ramsoo sector of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway during the night, causing closure of the road,” a senior traffic department official told IANS here.

“The border roads organisation (BRO) that maintains the highway is removing the landslides’ debris to help restore vehicular movement on the highway.

“Those intending to undertake the travel along the highway should first contact traffic control rooms in Jammu and Srinagar to know about the status of the road,” the official added.

Snowfall on Zojilla Pass blocked the Srinagar-Leh National Highway two days ago. The highway connects the Kashmir Valley with the cold desert Ladakh region of the state.

Snowfall in Pir Ki Gali area of the ancient Mughal Road also suspended the surface link between the valley and Rajouri district in Jammu region on Friday.

Snowfall on Sadna Top and Rajdhani Top in the north and Sintham Pass in the south has also snapped road links to Karnah and Gurez border towns and the Kishtwar town.
