The police action is based on a video which went viral recently showing a mob attacking a young couple near the dargah, he said.

The video showed a young couple being dragged out of a guest house in Piran Kaliyar by a mob which abuses them and beats them up thrashed and publicly humiliated them while they pleaded with it to let them go. The entire act was recorded and uploaded on the mobile messaging app, police said.

SSP Haridwar Sweety Agarwal told Times Of India, “No one has the right to take law in their hands. As no one came to us with the complaint, we have registered an FIR against the unidentified persons on the basis of the video.”

Meanwhile, locals alleged that some of the guest houses in the holy town are being used for “illicit relationships by offering rooms to unwed couples”. The couple was taught a lesson because of this, they added.
