Dehradun: A young couple was allegedly dragged out of a guest house in Piran Kaliyar area here and beaten by a group of 15-20 local youths following which a case was registered against 20 people and two of them were arrested today. The incident occurred on September 16 but police swung into action today after a video of the incident went viral on social media sites.
Station in-charge, Piran Kaliyar police station, Rajiv Rauthan said that around 20 people have been booked in this connection under various charges.
The police action is based on a video which went viral recently showing a mob attacking a young couple near the dargah, he said.
The video showed a young couple being dragged out of a guest house in Piran Kaliyar by a mob which abuses them and beats them up thrashed and publicly humiliated them while they pleaded with it to let them go. The entire act was recorded and uploaded on the mobile messaging app, police said.
SSP Haridwar Sweety Agarwal told Times Of India, “No one has the right to take law in their hands. As no one came to us with the complaint, we have registered an FIR against the unidentified persons on the basis of the video.”
Meanwhile, locals alleged that some of the guest houses in the holy town are being used for “illicit relationships by offering rooms to unwed couples”. The couple was taught a lesson because of this, they added.
