Iraqi girl gets first beauty queen title since 1972

Baghdad: Shaymaa Abdelrahman, 20-year-old girl hailing from Kirkuk, province of Iraq was selected as the beauty queen after four decades. She felt very happy and said that Iraq is moving forward.

She promised that she would use this opportunity to develop educational facilities in the country which is facing troubles recently.

A contestant of the event told that she would work for the reconstruction of Mosul dam which needs immediate repairs as it threatened the entire country. Eight finalists visited the refugees camp in Baghdad as part of their pre-pageant activities.

Suzam Amer (22) a girl from Kurdish town of Sulaimaniyah described beauty pageant as more than a mere distraction in Iraq.

Hana Edwar, a Human Rights Activist opined that the situation in Iraq could become normal in due course.

The last beauty contest to select “Miss Iraq” was held in 1972. This was the period when the country was peaceful and progressing.
