Indonesian unmarried couple caned for violating Sharia law

Jakarta: A young unmarried woman Nur Elita and a man received five lashes publically in Indonesia’s Aceh province for violating Sharia law and being “too intimate” with each other.

Both 23-year-old Wahyudi Saputra and 20-year-old Nur Elita, were university students, caned for “khalwat” – affectionate contact – in front of a crowd, according to the The Jakarta Post.

Nur was marched to the yard of Baiturrahumim Mosque in Banda Aceh were a masked man carried out the caning outside the mosque. At the end of the punishment, she collapsed on the floor and was carried off the stage into an ambulance and rushed to hospital.

“Take these punishments as a lesson. What has been done by these convicts should not be taken as an example. And I hope their canings in Meuraxa district today will be the last ever,” he said, according to Antara.

Aceh is the only region in Indonesia that implements a very strict system of Shariah law. Shariah law is still implemented across the Middle East and in Isis territories.
