Handloom sector has inherent strengths that need to be marketed: PM Modi

Chennai, Aug. 7 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the handloom sector has inherent strengths that need to marketed.

“India is home to several world famous handloom products. The handloom sector has inherent strengths that we need to market,” said Prime Minister Modi after inaugurating the National Handloom Day at a function here.

“Can we not enhance the use of handlooms in our daily lives? We need to popularise this among our youth. This will give the much-needed boost to the handloom sector,” he added.

Stating that the sale of khaadi had gone up by 60 percent since he gave a call for its promotion last year, the Prime Minister pointed out that a similar effort is required for handlooms now.

“On October 2 last year, I had asked the people to use one item of khaadi products to brighten up the lives of artisans. The sale of khaadi has gone up by 60 percent as compared to same period last year,” he said.

“We now also need to give a similar call for handlooms, we have many options to enhance use handlooms in our daily lives,” added the Prime Minister.

The Handloom Day will be celebrated all over the country in cooperation with state governments.

The date August 7 has been chosen due to its special significance in India’s history; it was on this day that the Swadeshi Movement was launched in 1905. (ANI)
