Gurgaon couple arrested for ‘torturing’ minor domestic help

The Gurgaon Police on Thursday arrested a couple allegedly for torturing their minor domestic help.

Following a tip-off, police rescued the girl from a cupboard of the businessman’s house on Wednesday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hawa Singh said the girl’s statement was recorded and a medical check-up of the victim was also conducted before child welfare officials.

“The couple used to beat up the girl for things like having food without their permission. The couple has been arrested. The man, identified as Sagar, was arrested first and is on a police remand, while his wife was arrested later,” said the ACP.

The girl was found unconscious inside the cupboard when a team of police along with activists from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) visited the house after receiving a call to a helpline.

This was cops’ second attempt to rescue the girl, as their earlier search went in vain.

Singh said the girl had been staying with the family for around five to six months.

“The girl hails from Jharkhand and was brought here by her uncle. The girl has told us that her uncle lives in Sohna, but he is not there,” said the officer, adding that the girl has now been sent to a shelter home.

The teenager purportedly told the NGO activists and police that she was beaten up regularly and kept starved by her employers.

This incident came a month after two Nepali women were rescued from the residence of a Saudi Arabia diplomat in Gurgaon. The women working as domestic helps accused the diplomat of rape and torture.

They were rescued after a tip-off from a human trafficking group and the Nepalese embassy. (ANI)
