Girl raped, killed in Mumbai; carpenter held

Mumbai: A 23-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed by a carpenter, who has been arrested, police said today.

The accused – Mohammad Siddhique (28), was arrested last evening by the sleuths from Malvani police station, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni said.

On December 17, the victim was set ablaze allegedly by Siddhique at her house in a suburban area after raping here, Milind Khetle, senior inspector of Malvani police station said.

The girl was rushed to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar hospital where she succumbed to burn injuries the next day, he said.

During investigations, a pair of used condoms and a newspaper was found in the dustbin from the spot where the alleged crime took place, said Khetle.

Siddhique’s mobile number was found to be scribbled on the newspaper and his last location was found to be near the victim’s house, he added.

Considering this, the accused was questioned and initially Siddhique’s claims and statements were found to be contradictory, the police official said, adding he eventually broke down and confessed about the crime which he committed.

Following which, he was arrested and a case under relevant sections of IPC was registered. A local court has remanded him in police custody till December 28, Khetle said.
