Eighteenth death anniversary of Mother Teresa observed in Kolkata

Kolkata: Missionaries of Charity, the global order of nuns founded by Mother Teresa, remembered the great missionary on her 18th death anniversary here on Saturday.

The ethnic Albanian Roman Catholic nun, who dedicated her life to poor, sick and dying in India, died in 1997 at age 87. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003 at the Teresa was also the recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize.

Hundreds of followers came together to pay tribute to Mother Teresa at a prayer meet organised by the Missionaries of Charity.

A nun, Sister Prema, said she remembers Mother Teresa as a ray of hope for all kinds of people

“Mother Teresa was the joy of everybody with whom she met, especially the poor. She was that light and that hope whenever she walked and touched people with a simple way of relating to them with one word and one touch of her hand. That is what I remember of Mother today (sic),” said Sister Prema after offering prayers.

Followers also sang prayer songs along with the nuns as they remembered Teresa. Mother Teresa, the “saint of the gutters” lovingly brought aid and dignity to the “unwanted, unloved and uncared”.

Her house in Kolkata is famous as the Mother House. It is taken care by her charity and it is where her tomb lies. (ANI)
