Delhi: Woman from North East harassed, husband and friend beaten up

New Delhi: A 32-year-old married woman from the northeast was allegedly harassed while her husband and a friend beaten up by three youths at south-east Delhi’s Amar Colony area, police said on Monday.

All three accused – identified as Ankit (19), Rahul (22) and Jatinder (22) – have been arrested by the police. The accused were with their friends, Kunal and Vaibhav, whose roles in the incident are still being probed, said Mandeep Singh Randhawa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East).

The incident took place on the intervening night between Friday and Saturday. The woman, her husband and the friend were returning home from another friend’s house in Amar Colony, said a police official.

In her complaint, the woman, a native of Assam alleged that they were waylaid by Ankit and Kunal, who were standing outside a nearby godown. On seeing the woman walking with her husband and the friend, Ankit allegedly passed obscene remarks. When her husband asked Ankit to go away, he came closer and exhaled cigarette smoke on the woman’s face.

This led to an argument between the husband and Ankit. Soon Ankit started beating him up and the victim’s friend. Ankit’s friends Rahul, Vaibhav and Jatinder also joined him in beating the duo, police said.

Meanwhile, the woman called up the police control room and reported the incident. Soon, the police reached the spot and detained Ankit and his friends. The injured were taken to a hospital for first aid.

A case was registered under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC at Amar Colony police station, said a senior police official.

“Preliminary investigation suggested that Ankit, Rahul and Jatinder were directly involved in the act. So they were arrested immediately after the incident being reported around 1.45 AM. Roles of Kunal and Vaibhav are still being probed,” he added.
