Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said that Delhi government will strictly implement proposed minimum wages legislation which provides stringent punishment like higher fines and imprisonment for violations.
Participating in the discussion on ‘Minimum Wages (Delhi) Amendment Bill, 2015′ in Assembly, he warned those organisations which violate provisions of bill against strict action.
The legislations — Minimum Wages (Delhi) Amendment Bill, 2015 in Assembly and The Working Journalists and other Newspapers Employees (Conditions of Services) and Miscellaneous Provisions (Delhi Amendment) Bill, 2015 are likely to be passed in the Assembly tomorrow.
According to the Chief Minister, the Supreme Court had in 1992 given a judgement on minimum wages, but no government has implemented the apex court’s ruling so far in India.
“As per my view, Delhi government is the first government which is going to implement the Supreme Court’s judgement in national capital.
“As per existing Act, if employer violates the rules, there is a provision of imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of up to Rs 500 only. But, our government is now going to increase imprisonment of up to three years and will ensure that this new legislation is strictly enforced in Delhi,” Kejriwal told the House.
He alleged that previous government have not taken any step about labourers’ welfare until big agitations took place.
“I think this is the first time that without any pressure, any government is thinking about such class and taking an influential step for them,” Kejriwal said.
The CM also said that if government receives a complaint against any organisation that it is not giving minimum wages to its employees, action will be taken within three months and the organisations will have to put the data of its employees on their websites,” he said.
Kejriwal added that AAP government is contemplating to set up mobile schools, aanganwadi centres, hospitals for construction workers. .
