Chennai: The educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will remain closed for the next two days in Chennai for cleaning of the flood-hit areas.

“To clean and dry the zone, holiday has been declared for schools and colleges tomorrow and a day after in Chennai,” Chennai District Collector E. Sundara Valli said.

The central and state forces have shifted their focus on relief works in Chennai as most of the inundated places have become cleared of storm water. Air dropping of relief materials has been called off as the road connectivity has improved.

In Chennai and its suburbs, the flood situation has considerably improved and the people woke up to a bright sun, bringing the much needed relief.

Heavy rain has led to flooding of many places in Tirunelveli, Tirupur and Karur districts of Tamil Nadu.

The civilian aircraft have begun operations from the Chennai Airport on a limited scale, though the airport authorities have declared it open for full-scale functioning day and night for domestic and international services.

Earlier in the day, the government announced that those who have lost their passports or got them damaged due to the floods in Chennai can have them replaced free of charge.

“If your passport is lost or damaged in floods, pl go to any of three Passport Seva Kendra’s in Chennai. They will issue u fresh passport free of charge,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted. (ANI)
