Chain snatchers jump into river to escape from police

Pathankot, Aug 24: Two chain snatchers who were riding a stolen motorcycle jumped into Chakki river here when a police party and some locals gave them a hot chase.

The snatchers first threw the bike and then themselves jumped into the river from a height of about 100 feet, police said today.

However, the duo’s luck ran out and after great efforts the police arrested them and also recovered the stolen motorcycle and a gold chain and cash from the accused.

The accused were identified as Dalip Kumar, a resident of Chhani Beli of Himachal Pradesh and his brother-in-law Jatinder Kumar, a resident of Tanda in Hoshiarpur district, police said today.

Police said a woman identified as Monika was going with her husband to her village Kanwa, when the accused allegedly snatched a gold chain and purse containing cash from them yesterday, police said.

Locals raised an alarm and then police chased the duo. Some locals also joined them in the chase. Police said during investigation the accused confessed to having stolen the bike from Tanda area.

A case has been registered agains the two and investigations were underway, they said.
