‘Centre should intervene and tackle the situation in Varsity’

Puducherry: BJP today requested HRD Minister Smriti Irani to intervene to ‘save’ Pondicherry University, where students have been on a week long stir, demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Dr Chandra Krishnamoorthy for “administrative chaos” and “violation of human rights”.

The party’s local unit General Secretary V Swaminathan in a letter to the minister, urged that the VC be removed from the post for her ‘various omissions and commissions’.

Copies of the letter were distributed to reporters here.

The Vice chancellor had also shown negative attitude towards the plight of the students, who were facing acute shortage of hostel facilities, scarcity of drinking water and other basic amenities, he said.

The Students Movement had launched strike on July 27 to focus on the grievances of the students.

Swaminathan also referred to the police lathicharge on the students and alleged they were forcibly removed.

The situation was turning from bad to worse with the Vice Chancellor not taking steps to hold talks with the agitating students, he said and urged the union minister to take steps to bring the Vice Chancellor to justice “for her various acts of omissions and commissions”.
