Australia tighten stranglehold on Kiwis in Brisbane Test

Brisbane, Nov. 7 : Australia maintained a complete stranglehold over New Zealand as their overall lead swelled to 503 at stumps on day three of the first Test in Brisbane on Saturday.

Earlier, Steven Smith decided not to enforce follow-on after dismissing the Black Caps for 317 with Kane Williamson scoring a defiant 140.

Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts by claiming four wickets, while firebrand left-hander Mitchell Johnson bagged three wickets.

Openers David Warner (116) and Joe Burns then set a new record by becoming the first Australians to combine for 100-plus stands for the first wicket in the same test. The duo struck a 237-run partnership in the second innings to add to their first innings stand of 161.

Burns (129) notched up his maiden Test century as Australia made 264-4 before the stumps were drawn, with Usman Khawaja (9) and Adam Vogues (1) remaining at the crease. (ANI)
