Assembly panel seeks report on city lakes

Hyderabad: The Estimates Committee of Telangana Legislature has directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to submit a detailed report on the status of 169 lakes in their limits.

The directions were issued during the Committee’s meeting held in Assembly premises on Monday. Committee Chairman Ramalinga Reddy and members including MLCs MS Prabhakar, Janardhan Reddy, Rajeshwar Reddy and Aminul Hassan Jafferi and MLAs DK Aruna and Prabhakar Reddy participated in the meeting. Principal Secretary MG Gopal, GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar and other senior officials were also present in the meeting.

The Committee asked the officials to submit a details report on all 169 lakes which includes 22 lakes in Hyderabad, 133 in Ranga Reddy and 10 lakes in Medak district. The committee said details like encroachments and measures taken to protect the lakes should be incorporated in the report.

The Committee has also decided to visit Durgam Cheruvu, IDL Cheruvu and Hussain Shah Wali Lake on August 11. (INN)
