Benghazi: Witnesses and officials say Libya’s Islamic State affiliate has seized control of a neighborhood in the central city of Sirte, going door to door searching for members of a rival group it has been battling for days.
Mohammed Hadia, a government committee member, said IS fighters are looking for members of the Frejani tribe to kill or detain. The tribe fought alongside an Islamist group that refused to pledge allegiance to the IS affiliate, which then laid a siege on the neighborhood for days.
Alaa Frejani said his family in Sirte saw IS militants using loudspeakers to warn residents of neighboring areas they would face a similar fate if they cross them.
The IS affiliate spread in Sirte in March, taking advantage of the chaos plaguing Libya since 2011.
