8 Die After Having ‘Toxic Alchohol’ in West Bengal

KOLKATA: At least eight persons died and four persons fell sick allegedly after consuming spurious liquor at two villages in East Midnapore district, a senior police officer said today.

The eight deaths were reported from Narikeldaha and Kiyarana villages in Moyna police station limits in East Midnapore district, SP Alok Rajoria told PTI, adding that two persons have been arrested in this connection so far.

“Four persons from Narikeldanga village died yesterday and four from Kiyarana expired today. But it’s still under investigation whether they perished after consuming spurious liquor or not. We have sent our team to look into the matter,” Mr Rajoria said.

One person was admitted to a local facility while three were taken to the ‘Purba Medinipur Zilla Hospital’ in Tamluk after they complained of sickness, the SP said.

“This has triggered panic in the area and people are rushing to hospitals even because of slightest uneasiness,” he stated.

Series of raids are on at different places in and around Moyna Tehsil as part of the investigation, Mr Rajoria said.
