30 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

Kabul: At least 30 Taliban militants were killed in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan on Sunday, official said.

“Scores of Taliban militants stormed police checkpoints in Nahr-e-Saraj district at 10.00 a.m. (local time) on Sunday, which triggered heavy gun battle and left 30 insurgents dead, forcing others to flee,” Xinhua quoted provincial police chief Nabi Jan Mullahkhil as saying.

Only one police constable sustained injuries in the fight, which lasted for five hours, the officer said.

The militants, according to the officer, attempted to block the road linking Helmand’s provincial capital Lashkar Gah to the neighbouring Kandahar province but police foiled their attempt.

Taliban militants who are active in Helmand province are yet to make comments.
