Delhi police nab serial criminal

New Delhi, February 24: Delhi Police have arrested a man involved in 17 cases of robbery, molestation and drug peddling here, a senior official said Wednesday”Pankaj (24) was caught from Rohini Tuesday and two live cartridges and a pistol were recovered from him,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand said.

According to police, Pankaj, a school drop out, has been involved in crime since 2001. He has been in and out of jail several times and had been out on bail since November 2010.

Man held for vehicle thefts

New Delhi, February 24: A 19-year-old school dropout who took to vehicle theft to lead a lavish lifestyle has been arrested in north Delhi, police said Wednesday. “Gourav, a resident of Loni in Ghaziabad, was held with a stolen bike in Malka Ganj in north Delhi Tuesday,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rupinder Kumar.

“He is involved in a number of cases and sold 14 stolen motorcycles. Gourav has studied till Class 7 and was pursuing a computer course from a private institution,” said Rupinder Kumar.

Ajmal Kasab to be enumerated for census today

Mumbai, February 24: Reason for migration to India? What is your job profile? What is the nature of your job? These are few of the questions that Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab will have to answer when census enumerators visit him in Arthur Road jail Thursday.

Kasab, whose death sentence was upheld by the Bombay High Court on Monday, would be among the over 2,000 inmates of the high-security Arthur Road Jail to be counted by BMC enumerators.

Five arrested in Tumkur carnage

Tumkur, February 24: Five persons were nabbed today for their alleged involvement in the Chikkanayakanahalli carnage in the district in which five members of a family, including two children, were burnt alive after their house was set ablaze.

The accused, Nagesh (25), Mathava Thimmaiah (75), his sons Chandrashkhara and Basavaraj (both around 40) and Shivanna (50), brother of Thimmaiah were arrested last night, Superintendent of Police P S Harsha told PTI.

All the five were produced before a local court today and remanded to five days police custody, he said.

IAS officer slapped child over scratch to car

Chandigarh, February 23: A woman Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer here has been booked by the child rights panel for slapping a four-year-old girl who had accidentally caused an autorickshaw to scratch her car, officials said here Wednesday.

Sujata Dass, a 1978-batch Punjab-cadre IAS officer who is posted as secretary, vigilance inquiries, Punjab, has been booked by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). She had slapped the child, Garima, who is a nursery student, in full public view.

Villagers kill rare fishing cat

Krishnagar (WB), February 23: A fishing cat was hacked to death by villagers after they mistook it for a leopard in Nadia district, a forest department official said today.

The animal, about four feet in length, had entered the village last night.

J P Guharoy, Krishnagar range officer, said the carcass was then hung from a tree in Shutia village from where the forest department recovered it.

Jeweller shot dead in Delhi

New Delhi, February 23: A jeweller was shot dead and robbed of valuables worth lakhs of rupees in the national capital Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place at Lal Quarter market in Krishna Nagar of east Delhi.

Gaurav Gambhir, 30, died on the spot, police said.

The victim was in his jewellery shop along with two salesmen when a motorbike stopped outside his showroom.

“Three people went inside the showroom. One of the assailants put a pistol on Gaurav’s forehead and threatened him, while the others started collecting jewellery in a bag,” said a police officer.

Woman held with over 15 kg drugs

New Delhi, February 23: A woman was arrested in north Delhi with 15.9 kg of marijuana, police said Wednesday.

The accused was identified as Sushila, and was arrested from a park in Sultanpuri area on Monday.

“She was seen in a park in a suspicious condition with two bags. When she was asked to show the bags, she was reluctant,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma.

The bags were searched and 15.9 kg of marijuana was recovered.

Two Myanmarese youths, cyclist killed in two road accidents

New Delhi, February 23: A cyclist was crushed to death by a speeding car in east Delhi and, in a separate incident, two Myanmarese youths were run over by a vehicle in north Delhi Wednesday, police said.

Nigam Singh, 45, was killed near the Anand Vihar flyover around 9 a.m. The car driver was arrested. Medical reports suggested that he was drunk, police said.

“The victim was rushed to hospital where the doctors declared him dead,” said a police official.

Girl allegedly raped by neighbour

New Delhi, February 23: A 19-year-old girl hailing from Chhattisgarh was raped allegedly by her neighbour in south Delhi, police said today.

The incident took place at Anand Niketan area in Dhaula Kuan on Sunday and the accused, identified as Sanjay, has been arrested, a senior police officer said.

The victim, who works as a caretaker, was staying with her elder sister in Delhi. She was sleeping in her room when Sanjay barged into her room and locked it from outside.

Angry policeman attacks colleague at CST

Mumbai, February 23: In a shocking incident, constable Hemant Kadam, attached to Nashik city police, was assaulted by his colleague, head constable Sheikh, at the CST railway station on Monday over a minor quarrel. The victim, who fractured his left hand and collapsed, was admitted to the St. George Hospital at CST by a commuter. He was discharged from the hospital yesterday.

7 arrested for assault

Vaniyambadi, February 23: Vaniyambadi taluk police arrested and remanded seven persons for allegedly assaulting a 24-year-old man, on Tuesday.

According to police, Kaliappan of Pillaiyar Koil Street in Girisamudram village had lodged a complaint that a group of seven persons belonging to CV Pattarai village assaulted him with iron rods causing injuries.

The seven persons had picked up a quarrel with Kaliappan during a bull race held last week.

Sex trade in moving car busted

Jodhpur, February 23: Four persons, including two women, were arrested here today for running a sex trade in a moving car.

Salim Khan, Dilawer Khan, Saira and Geeta were arrested today following a tip-off that a Maruti van was serving as a “mobile brothel” in the city, DSP Harendra Kumar said.

Salim acted as a pimp and Saira used to provide girls in the car which picked up customers and dropped them off as it moved through the city, he said.

The Maruti van with tinted glasses and curtains on its windows has been impounded.

Teenager immolates self after rape attempt by youth

Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), February 23:A teenager here immolated herself after a youth tried to rape her, police said Tuesday. The accused is absconding.

The 19-year-old girl, who was a native of Quarsi town died Tuesday – a day after she had set herself ablaze after her 20-year-old neighbour tried to rape her.

“The girl had over 70 percent burns. She died today (Tuesday) while being treated at the Aligarh Medical College,” police inspector Udaiveer Malik told reporters in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

Those acquitted in Godhra case released from jail

Ahmedabad, February 22: All the 63 persons acquitted in the 2002 Godhra train burning case were released from Sabarmati Central Jail here this evening.

“All the 63 persons, acquitted by the special court today, have been released from Sabarmati Central Jail and are on their way to Godhra,” defence lawyer Irfan Pathan told PTI.

Special Judge P R Patel today found 31 persons guilty in Godhra train burning case for criminal conspiracy and murder while acquitting 63 other accused.

Congress leader arrested for burning Mayawati’s effigy

Etah, February 22: The Congress district president was today arrested for burning an effigy of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati during a demonstration to protest against a bill passed in the Assembly.

Pramod Gupta was arrested for holding demonstration and burning an effigy despite prohibitory orders effective in the city, sub-divisional magistrate S P Singh said.

Meanwhile, irked Congress workers gheraoed the police station and torched a roadways bus after Gupta was arrested, police said.

Ten Congress workers arrested have been arrested in this connection.

Woman arrested with 85 tortoises

Unnao (UP), February 22: A woman from Bihar was arrested here Tuesday with 85 tortoises but two of her aides escaped, police said.

Asha Mandal, 42, was nabbed from Mianganj area following a joint operation by police and the Government Railway Police.

The woman was to hand over the tortoises to her clients in West Bengal. She had been involved in illegal trade of tortoises, snakes, hides and wild animals in various states, police inspector L.P. Rai said here.

India has banned the trade of tortoises but the huge premium and lax laws are increasingly luring poachers to the trade.

Canadian shelter for Mujib’s killer angers media

Toronto, February 22: The Canadian media has slammed the government for not deporting Bangladeshi fugitive Nur Chowdhury who shot dead Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his extended family in in the August 1975 coup.

A 24-year-old major at that time, Chowdhury has been living in the Etobicoke area of Toronto since 1996.

Ahmedabad, February 22: Nine years after 59 people were burnt to death in the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station in Gujarat, a special court here Tuesday convicted 31 people. The accused were held guilty under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code:

Section 149 (unlawful assembly)

Section 302 (murder)

Section 307 (attempt to murder)

Section 323, 324 (causing simple injury)

Section 325, 326 (causing grievous hurt)

Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant)

Section 395, 397 (dacoity and robbery)

Section 436 (arson, fire)

Woman police constable allegedly molested

Pargans, February 22: Leader of the group whose members allegedly manhandled and molested a woman police constable was arrested today at Barasat in North 24-Parganas district.

Superintendent of Police North 24-Parganas district Rahul Srivastava said, “Raju Sadhu Khan has been arrested in connection with the case of manhandling and molesting the woman constable. He was leading the vehicle that carried the people who had shown disrespect to the constable.”

Two others are being searched in connection with the incident, he said.

Teenage girl raped, burnt alive in UP

Lucknow, February 22: Teenage girl was allegedly raped and burnt alive in Mauranipur area of the district yesterday.

The victim (14) in her dying statement charged that a youth, Rahul, raped her. Later he poured kerosene and burnt her to death, police said today.

The girl received 80 per cent burn injuries and died in the hospital late last night, police added.

Police said the girl was in relationship with the youth and her family members were opposed to it.

An FIR has been registered and police were in search of the accused.
